Notion is a flat canvas that relies entirely on the user to impose structure.
This is exactly wrong for agent-native workflows. Agents need semantic structure to operate. An agent that encounters a Notion page titled "Auth Decision" doesn't know if it's a binding decision, a draft proposal, a meeting note that mentions auth, or an abandoned idea. An agent that encounters a Native decision record with status "active" and links to three specs knows exactly what it is and how to use it.
Wikis and knowledge bases. This is Notion/Confluence territory, and it's a trap. Wikis are maintenance nightmares — they go stale, they accumulate cruft, they require constant gardening. The anti-wiki position is: everything in Native is either active (a spec being implemented, a decision in effect, a task in progress) or archived (explicitly superseded or completed). There's no "reference documentation" artifact type. If information is important, it's attached to a decision or spec. If it's not attached to anything, it's not important enough to maintain.
General-purpose documents. No blank page. Every artifact type has opinions about its structure. A decision has rationale. A spec has scope. A task has acceptance criteria. This feels limiting but is actually liberating — it means agents always know what to do with an artifact. A blank page is the enemy of agent productivity.
Real-time collaborative editing. Don't build Google Docs. Not because real-time collab isn't valuable, but because (a) you can't out-engineer Google on this, and (b) agent workflows are inherently asynchronous. An agent doesn't need to see your cursor moving. It needs to see a coherent artifact state, make changes, and submit them. The editing model is closer to Git (propose changes, review, merge) than Google Docs (simultaneous cursors).
Gantt charts, kanban boards, and project management chrome. Don't compete with Linear or Asana on visualization. Task management is table stakes, not the value prop. If a founder wants a kanban board, they can use Linear and connect it. Native's value is in the context graph, not in how prettily tasks are displayed.
Templates. This is controversial, but templates are a crutch. Templates say: "Here's a structure you should fill in." Agent-native artifacts say: "Tell me what you're trying to capture, and I'll create the appropriate structure." The agent IS the template. A founder says "I need to decide between React and Svelte for our frontend" and the agent creates a decision record with the right structure, pre-populated with relevant context from existing decisions and constraints. No template library needed.
The boundary is: Native owns the thinking and reasoning layer; other tools own the execution and presentation layers. Native doesn't need to be your code editor (that's VS Code/Cursor), your communication tool (that's Slack), your CI/CD (that's GitHub Actions), or your design tool (that's Figma). Native is where you decide what to build, why, and how — and where agents go to get that context when they're building.
This boundary is clean and defensible. Nobody else is building the thinking layer because nobody else has agents as first-class participants.
Alex, solo founder of a developer tools startup. Pre-revenue, 2 months post-launch. Works with Claude as their primary "team member." Has one part-time contractor (Jordan) who does frontend work 15 hours/week.

Notice what happened over this week: every interaction made the workspace smarter. Monday's feature planning added decisions and specs. Wednesday's board prep surfaced a strategic contradiction. Friday's onboarding validated that the accumulated context is genuinely useful to someone new. Each day's work made every future day more efficient.
In the Google Docs world, each day's work produced isolated artifacts that immediately started decaying. Alex ended the week with more documents to maintain, not more intelligence to leverage.
The bet is this: Decisions are the wedge. Context-aware artifacts are the moat. The thinking layer is the category.
The risk is that this market is too small today (only technical founders working heavily with AI). The counter-argument is that this market is growing at the speed of AI capability improvements, and whoever owns the thinking layer for AI-native teams will own the most defensible position in productivity software.
