For agents, branches are navigated through the artifact graph — an agent can query "show me all branches of artifact X" or "what's the diff between main and explore/b2c-pivot." For humans, this could look like a version sidebar that shows divergent timelines, similar to how Figma shows branches but extended to all artifact types.
The key insight: branches are not copies. They are alternate timelines with shared ancestry. This is what makes them cheap, traceable, and mergeable.
Git diffs are line-based. They tell you that line 47 changed from revenue = 1000000 to revenue = 1500000. For code, this is usually enough because code is structured and the smallest meaningful unit (a line, a function) is also a good diff unit.

The most powerful insight: artifacts that know how to diff themselves. A slide deck isn't just a collection of slides — it has a schema that defines what a "meaningful change" means. For agents, branches are navigated through the artifact graph — an agent can query "show me all branches of artifact X" or "what's the diff between main and explore/b2c-pivot." For humans, this could look like a version sidebar that shows divergent timelines, similar to how Figma shows branches but extended to all artifact types.
The key insight: branches are not copies. They are alternate timelines with shared ancestry. This is what makes them cheap, traceable, and mergeable.
Git diffs are line-based. They tell you that line 47 changed from revenue = 1000000 to revenue = 1500000. For code, this is usually enough because code is structured and the smallest meaningful unit (a line, a function) is also a good diff unit.
For knowledge artifacts, line-level diffs are almost useless. Knowing that paragraph 3 of a strategy doc changed doesn't tell you that the entire strategic direction shifted from growth-first to profitability-first. The characters changed, but the meaning of the change is invisible.
An agent-native diff has layers:

Producing semantic diffs is one of the places where agents shine beyond what Git tooling can do. When an agent modifies an artifact, it already knows the semantic intent of its changes — it's the one making them. The diff isn't computed after the fact; it's authored alongside the change.
This inverts Git's model. In Git, the diff is a derived artifact — you compute it by comparing two states. In an agent workspace, the semantic diff is a primary artifact — the agent declares what it changed and why as part of making the change.
Consuming semantic diffs is how agents build context efficiently. An agent picking up work on a document doesn't need to read the entire document plus its full history. It can read the current version plus the last N semantic diffs to understand the trajectory: where the document has been and where it's heading.
The most powerful insight: artifacts that know how to diff themselves. A slide deck isn't just a collection of slides — it has a schema that defines what a "meaningful change" means. Changing a font is cosmetic; changing a revenue number is substantive; changing the narrative arc is structural. The artifact type defines the diff granularity.
This means different artifact types produce different kinds of diffs:
In code, a merge conflict means two branches changed the same line differently. The conflict is syntactic — two strings can't both occupy the same location.
In knowledge work, conflicts are semantic. Two agents might update entirely different paragraphs of a strategy doc but introduce a logical contradiction. No textual overlap, but a deep strategic conflict.

New customer pipeline data? Revised pricing? Optimistic assumptions? The answer completely changes how you interpret the artifact.

Build: domain-aware merge agents that understand the artifact type. A merge agent for financial models knows about cell dependencies. A merge agent for strategy docs understands narrative coherence. A merge agent for decision records checks option consistency.
In Git, branches are a coordination mechanism — they prevent conflicts by isolating work. In knowledge work, branches are also a communication mechanism — "I'm exploring this direction" is a signal to the team. Branches need status (exploring, proposed, rejected, merged) and visibility that goes beyond Git's model.
Build: branch lifecycle with social metadata. Who created the branch, why, what's its status, who should review it, what decision does it inform.
Git communities debate rebase vs. merge, squash vs. preserve. For knowledge artifacts, the debate is less relevant because the commit log isn't a developer's primary navigation tool — the semantic diff timeline is. Preserve all history (no squashing) but provide semantic compression: "Between v1 and v4, the spec evolved from a broad product vision to a focused, technically validated, stakeholder-approved plan."

This is why Git's model, properly translated, is so powerful for agent workspaces. Not because agents write code, but because agents, like Git, treat the past and the hypothetical as first-class citizens alongside the present. An agent can reason about "what was this document like three versions ago" and "what would it look like if we took the other branch" just as naturally as "what does it say right now."
The workspace that makes history cheap, branching trivial, and merging systematic will win — not because of any individual feature, but because it makes the full dimensionality of knowledge work accessible to agents that think in exactly those terms.
